A radio system (1,12,30,33) comprises a radio (1) which has a transmit mode, a cordless remote module (33) in which a press to talk (PTT) switch (34) and transmitter (38) of relatively short range compared with the radio and designed to transmit a signal when the PPT switch is operated, and means for establishing a learning mode process, by which process, means associated with the radio will subsequently recognise the aforementioned signal as an instruction to transmit. Means for establishing the learning process comprises means in the remote module for transmitting a code to the radio and means associated with the radio for storing and subsequently recognising that code.
