To form an electric fence across a span, two conductive strands 23, 29 having different voltage potentials applied thereto are strung continuously and repeatedly between insulators 3, 4 on opposite sides of the span. Each strand passes through or through and around one or more insulators, and at least two strands at different voltage potentials pass through or around at least one common insulator 3b, 4c, 3d, 4e etc.
