The instrument (10) has a platen (11) with two straight edges (14,15) forming an angle of 45 degrees between them. These, and a central groove, all have calibrated scales, assisting the placement of designs on a piece of porcelain or fabric. The instrument (10) comprises a platen (11) which offers a point (12) formed at the intersection of two straight edges (14,15) forming an angle of 45 degrees between them. A further straight groove (18) extends along the bisector of this angle. A graduated scale (20,21) extends along each of the straight edges (14,15), arranged to slide parallel to the respective edge, whilst a third central graduated scale (30) is arranged to slide parallel to the bisecting groove (18). Further markings are provided on the plate, with the markings on the central part of the plate being spaced with a fixed ratio to those on the edges of the plate.
