A method of forming at least a single conducting chain of nanoparticles between a number of contacts on a substrate comprises: a. forming the contacts on the substrate; b. preparing a plurality of nanoparticles; c. depositing of a plurality of nanoparticles on the substrate at least in the region between the contacts and d(i) monitoring the conduction between the contacts or simultaneously between another set of similar contacts and ceasing deposition at or near to the onset of conduction to thereby form a conducting chain of nanoparticles between the contacts, or carrying out the deposition of a predetermined time calculated to cease the deposition of particles at or near to the onset of conduction between the contacts and/or d(ii) modifying the substrate surface or taking advantage of one or more pre-existing topographical feature(s) so as to cause the nanoparticles deposited in the region of the modification or topographical feature.
