PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detector, a lens equipped with this and a method for position detection which accurately detects positions by suppressing lowering of position detection accuracy due to discontinuation of position detection result, which was a problem in the conventional technique. SOLUTION: The position detector detects the position of a measuring object moving together with either one of a magnetic member extending in measuring axial direction and magnetized in a specific pattern, or a magnetism detection means for outputting a plurality of phases of signals periodically varying according to a relative motion to the magnetic member in the measuring axial direction based on a plurality of phases of signals. The detector has at least a phase conversion means for outputting a plurality of phases of phase conversion signals in the case that a specific phase difference is given to the phases, a reference operator for operating reference position information based on the signal values of phases in the case that a measuring object is in the present position, an auxiliary operator for operating auxiliary position information based on the conversion signal values of phases in the case that the measuring object is in the present position, and a position operator for operating the present position of the measuring object base on the reference position information and the auxiliary position information.
