A compact linkage for a grab fitted on a crane or a hoist has the two grab halves (4) pivot mounted on a central support (8) and operated by two servo cylinders (16) between the central support and the grab halves. The cylinders are connected to the grab via pivot mountings (12) while the top ends of the cylinder pivot mounted on the central support and fitted with gear shaped ends (20) which mesh to provide synchronous action of the two grab halves. The servo cylinder provide a direct drive to the grab halves and the whose grab mounting has a minimum height.
