A winding head for sitting the bottom (3) of a winding shaft (2) has a core with four equally spaced radial flanges onto which are fitted four segments which form a winding cylinder. The segments are fitted with U-shaped rails which fit over the radial flanges and which are secured by fasteners to slots in the flanges. The slots are profiled so that when the core is moved axially w.r.t. the sleeve, the segments are moved inwards to loosen the grip on the wound material.
