A machine for making a web of fibrous material (especially tissue or hygiene paper) has a main press comprising a pressing unit and a drying cylinder. The pressing unit of the main press and/or of a press unit associated with a preliminary press is formed by a shoe press unit to create a shoe press in either case having a press nip which is elongated in the direction of web travel. The first press encountered by the web is designed in such a way that a progressive increase in pressure takes place in the pressure profile p(L) over the press nip length (L), the increase beginning at the entry into the press nip and extending over at least a third, and preferably over at least a half of the press nip length (L).
