Acetal-containing p-phenylenediamine derivatives (I) are new. Acetal-containing p-phenylenediamine derivatives of formula (I) are new. R1 = hydrogen, 1-4C alkyl (optionally substituted by one hydroxy or 1-4C alkoxy), 2-4C polyhydroxyalkyl or halo; R2 and R3 = as R1 or the group -X-CH(OR4)(OR5) (II); X = 1-5C alkylene, optionally substituted by a 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy, hydroxy or halo; and R4 and R5 = 1-4C alkyl or together complete a 5 or 6-membered saturated ring, optionally substituted by 1-4C alkyl. At least one of R2 and R3 must be group (II) An Independent claim is also included for the 4-nitro-aniline derivatives of formula (I') provided that when R1 and R2 are both hydrogen and X is methylene, then R4 and R5 are not both methyl.
