PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which generation of light leakage is suppressed and a uniform cell gap is realized. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 1 is constructed by including first and second substrates 3, 5 placed opposite to each other, a sealing member 6 to stick mutually opposing surfaces of the first and second substrates 3, 5 together, a liquid crystal layer 7 formed by enclosing a liquid crystal composition in a space formed with the first and second substrates 3, 5 and the sealing member 6 and a holding member 9 to hold the first and second substrates 3, 5 so as to make them retain a previously determined distance L1 in between. As the holding member 9 accurately and certainly holds the distance L1 between the first and second substrates 3, 5 and besides is formed small in size so as to have <1μm<SP>2</SP>cross sectional area in a plane parallel to the substrate, the high-quality liquid crystal display device 1 in which the light leakage from the vicinity of the holding member is suppressed is realized.
