PISTON RING AND ITS MANUFACTURING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring and its manufacturing method with excellent abrasion resistance and scuffing resistance, achieving low friction of an internal combustion engine by reducing the frictional force. SOLUTION: In a piston ring 1 having a piston ring base material 2 and a hard coating 3 formed at least on outer peripheral surface 4 of the piston base material 2, shot-peening is previously performed on the outer peripheral surface 4 of the piston base material 2 before the hard coating 3 is formed thereon and dimples 5 are formed. At that time, it is preferable that innumerable dimples 5' of diameter of 0.1-5μm with tiny approximately sectional circular section are formed on an outer peripheral sliding surface 4' of the piston ring 1 and that the hard coating is formed with thickness of 3-7μm.
