PURPOSE: To provide brominated polyphenylene oxide which is blended with a resin to yield a resin molded product showing an excellent flame retardance, electrical characteristics, resin physical properties, thermal stability and appearance(hue) without causing corrosion of a mold, and a flame retardant using the same. CONSTITUTION: The brominated polyphenylene oxide has a molecular backbone comprising a condensed tribromophenol. Here, (A) the absorbance at 600 nm of its 20 wt.% chloroform solution is <=0.6, (B) the electric conductivity of its 1.00 g/ 30ml dioxane solution measured at 25°C after adding 50 ml ion-exchange water is <=10 μS/cm, and (C) the amount of halogen ion increased when heating a mixture comprising 20 wt.% brominated polyphenylene oxide and 80 wt.% triphenyl phosphate at 280°C for 20 min is <=10μ mol per 1 g brominated polyphenylene oxide.
