PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relieve an uncomfortable feeling during performing compulsory increasing operation of a gear ratio corresponding to a vehicle speed fall under a manual gear change mode selection. SOLUTION: A gear change mode of an automatic transmission 11 is shifted between an automatic gear change mode and the manual gear change mode on the basis of shift lever 28 operation. Under the manual gear change mode selection, a gear stage of the automatic transmission 11 is shifted through each shift switch 36, 37 operation and held. A vehicle speed is monitored by an electric control 40, and downshifting operation is compulsorily performed when a present speed becomes lower than an acceptable speed range. Switching from a driven condition to a drive condition in an internal combustion engine 10 is monitored by the electronic control 40 as well, and the downshifting is performed corresponding to the switching.
