PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing 2,3-difluoro-6-trifluoromethylbenzonitrile in short steps, mild reaction conditions and a high yield by using a readily handleable reagent capable of simply carrying out reaction operation from a readily available raw material. SOLUTION: The method for producing 2,3-difluoro-6-trifluoromethylbenzonitrile comprises converting 6-fluoro-2-bromo-3-trifluoromethylaniline to the corresponding diazonium salt in an aqueous solution containing tetrafluoroboric acid, its salt or hydrofluoric acid and nitrous acid ion, pyrolyzing the diazonium salt to produce 3,4-difluoro-2-bromobenzotrifluoride and cyanizing the compound.
