PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect angular positions of a steering handle or steering wheels of an automobile by utilizing method and device for detecting the angular positions of a rotating member, more concretely, an angular velocity sensor arranged together with a steering column of the automobile in a detectable relation. SOLUTION: In the device and method for providing data signals showing the current angular positions of the steering handle or the steering wheels of the automobile, a rotation sensor to detect rotation of the steering column 20 or the angular velocity sensor 30 is utilized. In the angular velocity sensor 30, two outputs for providing different phase relations and a third output for providing a signal at a center position, that is, a straight ahead position of the steering handle 22 or the steering column 20 are included. A counter for displaying the angular positions is increased and decreased by utilizing a pulse and the front edge. Accuracy of the outputs are compared with data by front wheel speed sensors 42L and 42R and a center position sensor to guarantee continuous operation accuracy. A storing device stores a current angular position when an ignition is turned off, and provides the information when the ignition is turned on. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
