PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device for reducing damage due to electrical discharges, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: An image display device has following components on a front substrate 2: a phosphor screen 6 including a phosphor layer and a light-shielding layer 22; and a metal back layer 7 consisting of a conductive thin film coated on the phosphor screen. And, on a back substrate disposed facing the front substrate, a plurality of electron-emitting elements that emits electrons to the phosphor screen are disposed. In addition, the light-shielding layer is formed like a concave-and-convex curved face, and the metal back layer has a conductive thin film 7b discontinuously on it in the respective positions where the light-shielding layer exists.
