PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a magnetization pattern of which the line width is small and PW50 is also small in a medium for high density recording. SOLUTION: This is a method for forming a magnetization pattern in which after a magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic layer is magnetized uniformly in a desired direction, the magnetic layer is heated locally, simultaneously, an external magnetic field is applied, and the heated part is magnetized in the direction being opposite to the desired direction. When pulse half value width of an energy ray (time width in which an energy ray of 1/2 or more of the maximum value of irradiation energy ray is irradiated) is assumed to be Lw, pulse width of an applied external magnetic field (time width in which a magnetic field of 80% or more of the maximum value of the supplied magnetic field) is assumed to be Mw, and thermal conductivity of a substrate of a magnetic recording medium is assumed to beσ, the following equations are satisfied: (Mw/Lw)σ<3×10<SP>6</SP>[W/m°C], Mw>Lw.
