1,065,046. Arc torches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. May 20, 1965 [June 11, 1964], No. 21372/65. Heading H5H. A three-phase arc heater comprises an arc chamber 15, an elongated electrode 16 having axially spaced arcing portions 17, 18 surrounded by torroidal electrodes 11, 12 and magnetic field producing means for rotating arcs struck between the electrodes. A water-cooled radiation shield 13 is provided between electrodes 11, 12 and these together with a bowl-shaped member 124 cooled by water tubes 126 define the arc chamber which is contained in a pressure vessel 10. Air is supplied through an inlet 26 and enters the arc chamber axially and circumferentially through passageways 144, 145 and ports 91, 99 exhausting through a watercooled nozzle 42. Each electrode is cooled and carries one phase of the A.C. supply. A D.C. supply to two coils 61, 119 in insulated housings 62, 118 produces a magnetic field causing the arcs to rotate. Arcing is started using ignition fuse wire between any two electrodes or by seeding an ionized gas.
|
