PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp of high-power and long-life even if it's a short arc type.

SOLUTION: Flat sections 22 with a width w1 parallel to a bulb axis (X axis) are formed almost in central sections of the cross-sectional outer outline of a luminous part 2. The shape of the cross-sectional inner outline of the luminous part 2 is formed so that linear sections 231 and linear sections 232 sandwich a y-axis in the center, make an angle, face each other, and almost form truncated chevron shapes, respectively, and the shape of the cross-section of the top and bottom inner walls become almost in a rhombus.
