PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mount a series hybrid type drive unit for an automobile in a longitudinal mount type vehicle layout of an engine drive type vehicle by improving packaging efficiency of two power units. SOLUTION: This drive unit for an electric automobile 1 includes a generator 3 for charging a battery which is a power source of a motor 4 for travelling, an engine 2 for power generation driving the generator 3. The engine 2 is longitudinally mounted on a vehicle and the generator 3 is attached at a rear end thereof. A power transmission mechanism 5 is attached between the generator and the motor which is arranged in rear of the generator 3. Two necessary power units 14, 15 are combined with one body in a series stationing. Since the generator 3 which is almost same size as an unnecessary torque converter is arranged in a position where the torque converter was arranged, the drive unit is a same size as a longitudinal mount type power unit for an engine driven vehicle as a result.
