PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head in which such a problem that a reproducing element contacts a recording medium and the medium is destroyed is prevented. SOLUTION: This head comprises a slider and an electromagnetic conversion element 20. The slider comprises a base part 1 and a protection film 17, and has a plane 40 facing the medium at one plane in the direction of thickness. The protection film 17 is provided at a side end plane of the base part integrally with the base part 1. The electromagnetic conversion element 20 is provided on a side end plane of the base part, and covered by the protection film 17. When the distance from the electromagnetic conversion element 20 to a medium contact end 41 of the protection film 17 isα1, 50μm≤α1≤200μm is satisfied. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
