PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect even a head in which abnormal recording infrequently occurs, which is difficult to be detected by a conventional head evaluation method, and to improve the manufacturing yield of a magnetic disk unit by detecting the head of a half-failure state early stage. SOLUTION: In the method for evaluating the quality of a servo track writer head, which evaluates the electric characteristics of the servo track writer for recording a servo track on a magnetic disk, a a VMM testing read channel is mounted on the servo track writer to detect the reading reproducibility of servo track information recorded on the magnetic disk by the head and, when servo track information is recorded on the magnetic disk by the head, VMM testing is simultaneously conducted, and the defective-nondefective state of the head is determined based on whether the error occurrence rate of the reading reproducibility of the servo track information exceeds a fixed threshold value or not.
