A flexible network of electrical heating wires (8) is useful for eliminating or reducing the formation or build-up of ice on a substrate, such as a railroad (1), highway, airport or sports pitch.In one embodiment, the network (8) forms part of a heating device comprising means (4) for capturing a renewable energy selected from solar and wind energy and converting said energy into electrical energy; and means (5) for storing at least part of said electrical energy; and is adapted such that in use at least part of the electrical energy is used to heat the network.
