Recombinant antibody single chain variable fragments (scFv) useful for detecting apoptotic cells are disclosed. The antibodies selectively bind on the surface of apoptotic cells. Methods of generating and employing the antibodies are also provided. Methods of detecting modulation of apoptosis are disclosed. Methods of evaluating the efficacy of a candidate therapeutic compound adapted to effect a change in apoptosis are also disclosed. Additionally, a kit for the detection of apoptotic cells is also disclosed.
