The invention relates to the field of medical appliances consisting of a plurality of computer units. In order to simplify the maintenance of the programs running on the computer units, an appliance and a computer unit to be used in one such appliance are provided. According to the invention, all computer units are continuously provided with updated data by means of a special program for automated data exchange between the individual computer units. To this end, a program is provided, said program being lodged in the memory unit of the first computer unit of the at least two computer units communicating with each other, and being run by means of the microprocessor of the first computer unit. First data elements are then analysed in the first memory unit during a value assessment, in order to check for transmission, via the communication interfaces, to another of the at least two computer units, for the updating of the data elements in the memory unit. In the event of a positive result, said transmission is carried out at regular intervals.
