<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which the simultaneous reception of operation instructions from a plurality of equipment can be prevented, the occurrence of unintentional operations can be reduced, and the operability of a user can be improved, and also to provide a program for controlling the image reader and a recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: The reception of a reading reservation of an original manuscript by a scanner is performed by the scanner connected with a plurality of computers. A decision whether the reception of the reading reservation of the original manuscript by the scanner is possible or not is made on the basis of the current use state of the scanner and the occupied state of the scanner by the other computer.
