[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] The invention comprises unsaturated fluorinated esters of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or a methyl group, n is 0 or an integer of 1-16 and R<SP>f</SP> is C 3-18 , a perfluorocarbon group which is a straight, branched or cyclic chain perfluoroalkyl group which may contain ether or amino linkages. The compounds are prepared by esterification of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a fluorinated alcohol R#CH=CH-(CH 2 )n-OH. Examples relate to the preparation of acrylates and methacrylates in which R<SP>f</SP> is a perfluoro-octyl group and n is 1 or 9. The unsaturated esters can be polymerized to give products which are used for oil- and water-repellent coatings.</p> |
