PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for search of in-focus object image data. SOLUTION: Subject image data obtained by image pickup of an image pickup device is taken into a focusing processor at each prescribed timing while varying the interval between a stage for placing an object thereon and the image pickup device. The focusing processor searches contrast data showing a maximal value from taken-in subject image data and stores object image data of this contrast data in an image information memory.
