PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for preventing a user from misunderstanding the situation as an accident by improving reading productivity. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus comprises a first read part 11 for reading an image the object of reading, by resting an object of reading 9; a second read part 1 for reading the image of the object of reading, while moving the object of reading 9 at a position separated from the first read part 11; the whole image read means 4-7 or a part 4 and 5 thereof for irradiating the object of reading with a light from a light source 4a; a moving means for moving the whole read means or a part thereof to a position for reading image in the first read part 11 and a position for reading the image in the second read part 1; and a control part 47 to be controlled so as to simultaneously start movement to the position for reading the image in the second reading part 1 of the whole image read means or a part thereof, when starting reading of the image of the object of reading in the second read part 1.
