PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for operating a terminal in at least two communication modes particularly in a communication system. SOLUTION: A communication terminal operates in multiplex modes including a cable phone mode, an Internet phone mode and a mode coupling the above modes. The terminal includes a cable phone part and an IP phone part for separately processing calls transmitted or received on a PSTN and the Internet. Besides, the terminal includes a processor for processing a call via a voice path linking the cable phone part and the IP phone part in the operation of a third mode, namely, of an external connection mode. The call is processed along with the path to actually reduce long-range and international call costs and to improve transmission efficiency as well. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
