<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-noise operation of an optical switch to be driven by light pulses subjected to data modulation by high repetitive frequencies. <P>SOLUTION: The two arms of a Mach-Zehnder type optical circuit MC are respectively provided with nonlinear waveguides (SOAs) 11 and 12 indicating the change in nonlinear refractive indices by optical amplification. The data-modulated impulsive branch light L<SB>PUL1</SB>and L<SB>PUL2</SB>(λ1) are introduced with a prescribed time difference into the SOAs 11 and 12 and the time difference thereof is set within the relaxation time of a change in the nonlinear refractive indices in the SOAs 11 and 12. The energy of the branch light L<SB>PUL2</SB>introduced earlier into the SOA 12 is set higher than the branch light L<SB>PUL1</SB>introduced later into the SOA 11. The total phase difference between the CW branch light L<SB>CW1</SB>and L<SB>CW2</SB>is so set as to be included near (λ2/2). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
