PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct control for reducing downtime if a failure occurs at a LED (light emitting diode), in an image reading device with a LED array system having a plurality of LEDs in one dimensional arrangement. SOLUTION: The device comprises a LED array light source having a plurality of LEDs in one dimension arrangement, a linear image sensor for receiving reflected light of a manuscript or a reference white board to read images, an abnormality detecting means for detecting abnormality in the LEDs, a display operating means for displaying the status of the device and receiving an operation for the device, and a control means for controlling to conduct a manuscript reading operation and read the manuscript if the position of an abnormal LED is out of the range of the manuscript, or controlling to display "LED is abnormal" on the display operating means and receive selection of start or stop of manuscript reading from an operator if the position of the abnormal LED is in the range of the manuscript, when the abnormal LED is detected by the abnormality detecting means.
