PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reactor which is equipped with a membrane separation device capable of selectively separating water vapor and hence is excellent in thermal efficiency. SOLUTION: This reactor produces a synthesis gas. The synthesis gas formed in the reactor contains at least either water vapor supplied for reaction or water vapor generated by the reaction. In the reactor 10, a water vapor permeable membrane as a membrane separation means is installed to selectively separate and remove the water vapor contained in the synthesis gas formed in the reactor; and the water vapor separated and removed with the water vapor permeable membrane and the synthesis gas after the water vapor removal are discharged out of the reactor through different systems.
