PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for production of 4-acetoxy-3-hydroxybutanoic acid ester. SOLUTION: The method for production of 4-acetoxy-3-hydroxybutanoic acid ester comprises a step to allow a 4-acetoxy-3-oxobutanoic acid ester expressed by general formula (1) to act on an enzyme or microorganisms producing the enzyme or its treated product, having activities reducing a ketone on the 3 position of the compound, and a step to collect the produced 4-acetoxy-3-hydroxybutanoic acid ester expressed by general formula (2).
