PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent tooth jump on a rack gear and a pinion gear. SOLUTION: This sheet width adjusting device includes a first pinion gear 36a, a pair of a first rack gear 23b and 31d for being meshed with the first pinion gear 36a on its both sides, a pair of slide members 123a and 124a each placed on each of the first rack gear pair, movable to a direction crossing a direction of sheet conveyance, a pair of horizontal register plate each placed on the slide member pair, being in contact with both sides of a sheet by movement of the slide member, and a pair of second rack gears 23d and 24d each placed on the slide member pairs, at a rear side of the first rack gear, a pair of second pinion gears 38 and 39 each being meshed with each of the second rack gear pair and a synchronization gear being meshed with the second pinion gear pair mutually.
