PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method capable of attaining highly accurate colorimetric results by recording an accurate patch such that a coloring material, e.g. ink or toner, is not imparted excessively. SOLUTION: A combination of four basic colors of Y, M, C and K is determined (S1001). Total quantity of coloring materials being used is then calculated for each combination of four basic colors with reference to the quantity of coloring materials being used of each ink (S1002). The total quantity of coloring materials being used for each combination is then compared with a maximum total quantity of coloring materials being used previously calculated similarly and a decision is made whether the former exceeds the latter or not (S1003). If the former exceeds the latter, the exceeding quantity is calculated and compression rate of patch data being used is calculated as boundary information (S1004). Data of all patches is then compressed uniformly at that compression rate thus generating patch data (S1005). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
