PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt conveyor capable of preventing scattering of powder dust of an object to be carried on a going path side and dropping of fine grain etc. of the object to be carried adhered and left on a carrier belt on a return path side, unnecessitating the installation of a dustproof cover etc., reducing costs and improving carrying ability, and its operating method. SOLUTION: A coating belt part 7 to wrap the object 7 to be carried by being folded to the inside is formed to be foldable/expansible at both width end parts of the carrier belt 3.
