PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechano-luminescent material having higher luminous intensity by using a matrix material different from those used for previous mechano-luminescent materials to thereby widen the fields of application thereof. SOLUTION: The mechano-luminescent material is obtained by using a matrix material comprising a composite metal oxide containing strontium and aluminum, represented by the general formula: SrM<SP>1</SP>Al<SB>6</SB>O<SB>11</SB>(wherein M<SP>1</SP>is an alkaline earth metal) or SrM<SP>2</SP>Al<SB>3</SB>O<SB>7</SB>(wherein M<SP>2</SP>is a rare earth metal), and a carrier containing as a luminescent center at least one metal selected from rare earth metals or transition metals capable of emitting light when the carrier excited by a mechanical energy returns to its ground state.
