PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide having enough quality as a polymerizable monomer and especially useful in producing a resin for hair spray, a photosensitive resin, a coating resin, an adhesive resin, a crosslinking agent for an unsaturated polyester, etc. SOLUTION: This N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide of high quality is obtained by reacting acetone or diacetone alcohol with acrylonitrile and sulfuric acid, hydrolyzing and netralizing the reaction product to form crude N-(1,1-dimethyl-3-oxobutyl)acrylamide, heating the crude product in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution to hydrolyze coexisting acrylamide, separating the hydrolyzed reaction liquid into an aqueous phase and an organic phase, and subjecting the organic phase to vacuum distillation.
