PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy of detecting a side edge of a color thermal recording paper by providing an output signal of a CCD line sensor in a range of a linearity by adjusting a luminance of a light source. SOLUTION: This color thermal printer detects a position of a side edge of a color thermal recording paper by imaging the side edge by means of the CCD line sensor by lighting it by an LED when printing an image. Before printing an image on each of a yellow thermal coloring layer, a magenta thermal coloring layer, and a cyan thermal coloring layer of the color thermal recording paper, the luminance of the LED is treated to be fitted to each of the thermal coloring layers. The adjustment of the luminance is performed such that the LED is activated at a cycle of one line printing in the printing on the thermal coloring layer, and then the side edge of the color thermal recording paper is imaged by the CCD line sensor. The luminance of the LED is adjusted such that the output signal of the CCD line sensor is in the range of its linearity. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
