The invention concerns a method and a device for filtering soot particles present in a gas stream. The filtering device comprises a deposition zone where the soot particles are at least partly collected. The filtering device comprises: means for eliminating the collected soot particles, in particular by means of an electrical resistor and/or by means of a combustion regenerating said soot particles, a sensor (1) located proximate and/or in said deposition zone. The soot particles are deposited on the sensor (1) in conditions similar to those in the deposition zone. Said sensor (1) enables determination of the activating time of the means eliminating said soot particles, that is the regeneration time.
