Microstructured optical fibre and process of its manufacture

The fabrication of a microstructured fibre optic comprises: (a) production of a number of capillary tubes by narrowing and drawing of tubes; (b) assembly of the capillary tubes around a central bar to form a bundle arranged in a preformer; and (c) drawing the bundle to form the fibre. The method also includes a step for the production of a self-cleaning layer inside the capillary tubes. This layer is made up of molecules able to react with hydroxyl (OH) molecules to form volatile gaseous compounds. An independent claim is also included for a fibre optic made up of a plurality of capillary tubes incorporating a self-cleaning layer.
