An evaporator (50 Fig 3) for heat exchange between a refrigerant and ambient air includes a plurality of refrigerant tubes (58 Fig 3), a plurality of fins (64 Fig 3) dispersed between each of the plurality of tubes, and at least two header tanks (52, 54 Fig 3) in fluid communication with the tubes. The refrigerant tubes may be formed in a U-shaped configuration to define a two-pass fluid circuit. At least one of the header tanks has a plurality of ports through which a refrigerant fluid flows into each of the plurality of tubes, and the heat exchanger alternatively includes a fluid distribution tube 80 within at least one of the header tanks. The distribution tube has a tubular body 82 including several ports defined by slots 88 spaced from a central position and of varying depth which decreases in depth towards the tube end. The slots are aligned with the refrigerant tubes, as defined by the position of a flange 84 which ensures accurate location of the tube within the header. The header tanks may also include internal turbulators, and the turbulators may be positioned within the distribution tube (98 Fig 5B). The distribution tube may be in the form of an insert, and may be inserted within angle of between plus and minus 35 degrees with respect to a vertical reference line. The evaporator may be used in an automotive air conditioning unit. |
