A robot cleaner 10 includes a drive unit (15, fig.1) for driving a plurality of wheels, a camera 14 disposed on a body of the robot cleaner for photographing an upper image of an area perpendicular to a running direction. A controller (18, fig.1) recognises the position of the cleaner by using position information obtained using a recognition mark 31 formed on the ceiling of a working area that is photographed by the camera. The controller controls the drive unit using the recognised position information to follow a target route in a cleaning operation. Preferably the recognition marker comprises one or more black recognition markings 131 of different lengths formed in an azimuthal direction. The controller may be a remote controller capable of wireless communication with the robot cleaner.
