A synthetic resin sheet having longitudinally extending cavities 3, Fig. 2 (not shown), separated by partitions 2 is formed by extruding synthetic resin material through a die head 10, Fig. 10, containing a mandrel 17 formed with slots 28, Fig. 12 (not shown), for the shaping of the partitions 2 and with passages 20 for feeding air or a solid or expanded organic filling material into the cavities 3. The extruded sheet is cooled and set between endless metal belts 22 provided with conduits 23 for cooling fluid. The latter are contained in suction chambers 26 by means of which the surfaces of the extruded sheet are drawn against the belt surfaces and shaped and cooled thereby. The synthetic resin material may be fed intermittently to form transverse ridges or partitions within the spaces 3. Also by injecting air in spurts through the passages 20 a sheet having spherical cells (Fig. 9, not shown), may be produced. By using one endless belt only a sheet having one flat surface and one cobbled surface may be produced (Fig. 4, not shown). In a modified apparatus (Fig. 13, not shown), the extruded sheet is passed between cooled stationary surfaces before being engaged between a pair of endless belts, and a layer of cloth, paper, or synthetic resin may be applied to a surface of the extruded sheet between the latter and one of the endless belts. Apparatus for extruding two sheets simultaneously (Fig. 14, not shown) and for extruding tubular shapes (Fig. 18 not shown) are also described. |
