The method involves controlling several pumps, each of which has a signal sender that switches the pump on, and each pump is blocked automatically after running by changing its switch-on value and released again depending on whether other pumps in the sump are running. The starting liquid level threshold value for each pump is increased from an initial value after running and reduced again depending on whether other pumps are running. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a pump with a signal sender and a controler for activating the pump.
