PURPOSE: A method of preparing a polyvinyl alcohol microfibril staple fiber is provided to make commercial mass production by using methanol for saponification. CONSTITUTION: In a method of preparing a polyvinyl alcohol microfibril staple fiber, a copolymer of poly(vinyl pivalate/vinyl acetate) is saponified in the presence of a solvent of methanol, and a saponification solution selected from aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide while making the shearing speed be controlled to be in the range of 20-10,000rpm. The saponification solution contains 0.005-0.07mol of sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide and 0.01-0.8mol of water with respect to 1g of the copolymer of poly(vinyl pivalate/vinyl acetate).
