Apparatus for enabling the envelope of a discharge device e.g. a spark gap or flash lamp, to be filled with a gas or vapour comprises a filling tube 3 making a gas-tight joint with envelope 1 and having a bore 8 communicating at one end with the interior of the envelope and having openable closure means 10 at the other end operated by a device 18 which extends out through a fitting 14 which is secured to said other end of filling tube 3 and which defines, with filling tube 3, an enclosure 15 having valve controlled passage means, such as 22, 23, connected to apparatus for causing gas to flow into and out of the enclosure. As shown, the filling tube 3 may comprise an electrode of a spark discharge device, the electrode being demountably secured to an extension 5 of the envelope. When the envelope becomes blackened by use, instead of discarding the device, the blackening may be removed by dismantling and withdrawing the electrodes whereby access to clean the interior of the envelope may be obtained through the resulting apertures. The device may then be refilled with gas by replacing the electrodes 2, 3, securing the fitting 14 over the filling tube 3 and using screwdriver device 18 to unscrew plug 10 which closed the filling tube 3, thus forming a passage between the interior of the envelope and enclosure 15. A vacuum pump attached to one of the passageways 22, 23 evacuates the envelope through its respective valve which is subsequently closed. The other valve is then opened to allow gas under pressure from a suitable supply to enter the envelope. The envelope is sealed by reinserting the plug 10 into the filling tube 3 and screwing it home tight, and the fitting 14 and its accessories are removed and the electrical supply connections restored. Instead of being formed by an electrode the filling tube may be quite separate, in which case the fitting may remain in position and, if the filling tube is of considerable length, which may include a portion of flexible hose, the fitting may be remotely situated from the discharge device.</p>
