1,046,373. Printing-surfaces. PAPER CONVERTING MACHINE CO. Inc. March 8, 1965 [May 11, 1964], No. 9657/65. Heading B6C. A flat imaged printing plate 22 is treated to make it suitable for clamping on a plate cylinder, Fig. 14 (not shown) by longitudinally stretching it in a uniform manner, clamping it between spaced parallel bars 28, 31, marking transverse lines on the plate using the opposed edges of the bars as guides, and bending the plate about the lines so as to produce insert flaps adapted to be clamped within the dovetailed recess of the cylinder. Initially the imaged plate is located on a platform 27 and the bar 28 is screwed down at a predetermined distance from the image at one end of the plate. The platform is then moved to a vertical position 1, Fig. 7, and the bar 31 is screwed down while the plate is tensioned by weights 34, 35. After marking the plate is cut to size, Fig. 10 (not shown), heated if necessary, Fig. 11 (not shown), and bent over along the inscribed lines with a roller, Fig. 12 (not shown). The platform 27 and the associated bars &c. may be mounted on a swivel joint. It is stated that the plate may be of magnesium, zinc, aluminium, a metal-backed rubber or photopolymer, or a plastic-backed metal &c. A plurality of plates treated according to the invention may be mounted on cylinders in the same press. |
