1,046,833. Adjustable seat backs. K. A. DAVIDSSON. Feb. 3, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963], No. 4414/64. Heading A4J. [Also in Division E2] A hinge connection between the back and seat of a chair-especially the front seat of a car-has a locking handle 29 which clamps inclined faces 16, 17 on a bearing housing 13 against surfaces 11, 20 on a bearing support 10 and bearing washer 18 respectively, arms 9, 14 connecting the support 10 and the housing 13 to the back and seat respectively. A spiral spring located between members 10, 18 urges the back forward against the passenger so that a comfortable position can be selected before tightening the locking handle 29. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) a stop 42 is provided so that if the seat is tipped forward to give access to the rear seats is will return to the adjusted position without need for resetting. Adjustment is also provided to ensure that when tightened the handle 29 always extends forwardly to a convenient position. The seat backs can be folded rear-wardly to a horizontal position for conversion into beds. |
